JENNIFER LOTHRIGEL

THE CHORUS OF
INDESTRUCTIBLE EMPTINESS

I am drunk on milky
void and

red kazoo from
slobbery lips,

moist jungle bird
courtship dances,

the soprano section’s lifted
rib cages,

as if they were
my own mouth

whirling its dervish
ego

I want to tell you
about the parts of me

that are alien.
Do you have a tin can and a string?

LINEAGE

Lineage is your dominant arm bent backwards
when you are trying to eat soup; or someone
sitting before you, spooning kidney beans
into your mouth, gently wiping your dribble; or
its tomato soup, heirloom in summer, golden like
the sun, plump, greenhouse grown without
any pesticides; the way the knife glides smooth
through its fruit. Its old wars escaped by foot
through a dense swamp with only the clothes on
your back; the one soldier who looked the other
way while you ran as fast as you could; its your
fear of snakes; the way you know how to flavor
the goulash.

*first published in Mockingheart Review 2019 and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

POETS IN MORSE CODE explores the role of interpretation in storytelling. By incorporating Morse Code, one of the most widely used and recognized ciphers in existence, Saiterux juxtaposes lines of poetry against photographs and technical illustrations of flora & fauna from the early days of scientific exploration. Through the text and image pairings, the illustrations lean into the abstract elements of a story, recognizing that storytelling depends on the written word as well as the imagination, experiences, and knowledge each reader brings to the occasion.
