ABASIAMA UDOM

IN THESE TIMES

Amidst the blue waters of Owerri
lay she who rules my land
coming in forms diverse yet beautiful
mother and friend.
Amidst the calling waters of the Delta
she bathed, she washed
a jewel unto her people
mother to all, mistress of men.
She lay,
amidst the falling waters
even as it dribbled down the Delta
fragments of her touching every corner
lifting every path
even in these times.

ABASIAMA UDOM is a poet and writer with polymathic tendencies. She is currently pursuing a personal course on the meaning of life and has found a few joys during this study. They are food, music, books, family, sleep, and football.

POETS IN MORSE CODE EXPLORES THE ROLE OF INTERPRETATION IN STORYTELLING. BY INCORPORATING MORSE CODE, ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY USED AND RECOGNIZED CIPHERS IN EXISTENCE, SAITERUX JUXTAPOSES LINES OF POETRY AGAINST PHOTOGRAPHS AND TECHNICAL ILLUSTRATIONS OF FLORA & FAUNA FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATION. THROUGH THE TEXT AND IMAGE PAIRINGS, THE ILLUSTRATIONS LEAN INTO THE ABSTRACT ELEMENTS OF A STORY, RECOGNIZING THAT STORYTELLING DEPENDS ON THE WRITTEN WORD AS WELL AS THE IMAGINATION, EXPERIENCES, AND KNOWLEDGE EACH READER BRINGS TO THE OCCASION.
