WHAT INSPIRED ONE OF YOUR POEMS?
These poems [were inspired by] the process of getting hurt and learning how to heal and love yourself again. For most of the poems in this collection, I was coming from a place of having just been broken and trying to navigate how to heal.
TELL US AN OBSCURE THING YOU FIND INTERESTING ABOUT THE WORLD?
It's interesting how insanely different life can be if you just exit a place you find toxic and start over again somewhere new. The cultural contrast between difference places in different parts of the world is so insanely cool to me. That's what's interesting to me about the world, I guess.
WHAT ODD, FUNNY OR INTERESTING FACT CAN YOU SHARE ABOUT YOUR WRITING HABITS OR PROCESS?
I get the worst writer's block. It's like, I'll write for a couple hours one day, and then I won't write again
for maybe 2-3 weeks.
How important is language and/or word choice to your writing?
Language is super important to me in writing. I think it's really important to have your own distinct voice/writing style, so people see something and think "oh, that's definitely Hinnah's writing." I'm bilingual as well, so I really like to incorporate cultural elements into my writing so I can make it my own.
Are there any themes or reoccurring threads that you try to explore in your writing?
I really like to explore hard-to-discuss topics, whether it be abusive relationships or the political atmosphere at the time. I think it's important to use your voice to stand up for things you feel strongly about.
Is there something you find particularly difficult about the writing process?
Sitting down and beginning to write is the hardest part for me.
How much research do you do when writing?
If I'm writing about a cultural/political topic, research is important. I want to make sure I'm doing the topic justice.
wHAT IS THE TITLE OF AN underrated (or little recognized) book you love?
The Anatomy of Being – Shinji Moon. Such a beautiful collection from a self-published author.
What is your most recent work and where can readers find it?
My most recent work is To Build A Home, and it's sold anywhere books are sold! You can find access to it at the link in my bio on my Instagram page, @hennapoetry.
LASTLY, WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK 'KINGDOMS IN THE WILD'?
Bringing attention to free-thinking, unique voices that deserve a place in the writing community.
